Speed Limits

There is no speed limit on most sections of the Autobahn, and the recommended speed of 130 kmh / 80 mph is generally ignored. Drivers commonly travel at speeds up to 180 kmh / 110 mph and more.

Unless otherwise posted, speed limits are:

Residential areas 30 km/h 18 mph
Towns 50 km/h 30 mph
Highways 100 km/h 60 mph
Autobahn None / 130 km/h None / 80 mph recommended

Some residential streets are designated as play areas requiring you to drive at a walking pace.

German motorways use radars. If you are caught speeding you will be fined. If you are caught driving faster than 30 km/h over the designated speed limit, you may lose your license for a number of months.
