Embassies and Consulates

The embassies and consulates in Germany can assist expatriates by offering them a number of useful services. They can usually provide addresses and telephone numbers of English speaking specialists such as lawyers, doctors, translators and consultants. They can also provide information about the paperwork and certificates you may need while you live in Germany. It is also advisable to register with the embassy in the foreign country you live to, this makes it possible for the embassy to contact you if there is an emergency from home or if they are helping their citizens return home after a natural disaster or political unrest. Although the consulates and embassies offer you their assistance, they are not able to act on your part. They are not allowed to advise you legally, recommend specialists or give you financial assistance in any way.

Consulates will assist their citizens in times of emergency. They can help you contact your family, a lawyer or a bank to arrange the transfer of funds if you have been robbed, are ill or have problems with the law. In the case of a death in the family, your country’s consulate or embassy will inform the next of kin and assist you in making arrangements for a local funeral or having your loved one sent home.

Should you decide to get married and have children in Germany, your consulate can give you the information you need about marriage certificates or applying for your child’s citizenship abroad.

If you lose or want to renew your passport, your country’s consulate or embassy in Germany is able to issue you with a new one. Make sure you apply for a new passport well before one you are holding expires. It is difficult to obtain a replacement if your current passport is invalid. If your passport has been stolen, please report the robbery to the local authorities and then contact your consulate or embassy.
